Episode 49: How Games Help Students Navigate Failure as Part of the Learning Process with Jeremy Royster

lecture breakers podcast teaching and learning strategies

Description:

In episode 49 of the Lecture Breakers podcast, we talk about how games can help students become more resilient and accept failure as part of the learning process.

In this episode, our guest is Jeremy Royster. He’s a teacher, adjunct professor, and founder of FAILU.org where he teaches educators how to gamify their lessons. He actually uses games to teach games, which is awesome because he is modeling the process of teaching, learning, and navigating failure.

And, in one of my favorite parts of the conversation, Jeremy describes the 5 different types of players and how they are motivated by different aspects of a game. This is so helpful when thinking about how to engage, motivate, and assess student learning.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • Why it's important to help students re-frame failure and what it means as part of the learning process.

  • The 3 conditions that need to exist for a person to be engaged, driven, and motivated.

  • The 5 different types of players, what motivates them, and what keeps them engaged.

  • How to think about restructuring the entire learning environment as a game.
